A native of Jakarta, Indonesia, international award winning* pianist-composer Janice Wijaya has been actively teaching piano performance, music theory, music history and composition since 2010.
Her students range from 3 years old to adults (beginners to ABRSM Grade 8). Among them are Distinction achievers at ABRSM exams, as well as competition winners. Recently, she taught counterpoint in a theory class at the Junior Academy of Royal Academy of Music.
She was awarded with a scholarship from Manhattan School of Music, New York, where she received her Bachelor of Music. There, she worked with Andre-Michel Schub, winner of the Van Cliburn 1981, one of the most prestigious international piano competition.
While living in New York, she also worked with Eduardus Halim, student of legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz.
Ms. Wijaya received a scholarship from the Royal Academy of Music, where she achieved a Distinction for her Masters of Music degree. She produced “Debussian Exchange”, a documentary for her research project on Debussy’s Pagodes and the Gamelan.
With her teaching experiences as well as everything she has learnt from her mentors, she plans to continue passing down the knowledge and values to her students.
Ms. Wijaya is a firm believer of shaping her students to become well-rounded musicians, by training rigorously: technique, reading, theory, history, music analysis, and aural skills are all essential. This is to encourage her students to become independent, and can eventually be their own teachers.
